ISLAMABAD (June 07 2005): The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has revised the existing slabs to reduce customs duty on the import of cars. The duty will be 50 percent on the import of vehicles having engine capacity of 1,000-1,500cc. Previously, 50 percent duty was charged on the import of 1,000-1,300cc cars. Now the engine capacity has been enhanced to 1,500cc. The duty will be 65 percent on the import of cars with engine capacity between 1,501 to 1,800cc. Previously, 70 percent duty was applicable on the import of cars with engine capacity of 1,501 to 1,800cc.

Duty at the rate of 75 percent will be charged on the import of cars having engine capacity above 1,800cc.

At present, cars in CBU (completely built-up units) condition are subject to customs duty ranging from 50 percent to 100 percent. In order to provide some relief to the consumers and fair competition to the local assemblers, three duty slabs have been proposed, i.e., for CBU cars up to 1,500cc, 50 percent, for 1,501 to 1,800cc, 65 percent and above 1,800cc, 75 percent.

In addition, the Finance Bill proposes a withholding tax of six percent to be levied on locally manufactured new cars. Imported cars subjected to same tax at the same rate. However, this tax will be adjustable.

The government is pursuing a conscious policy of keeping the environment clean. Therefore, maximum use of CNG-based transport is being encouraged. In order to encourage the local assembly/manufacturing of CNG and Euro-II(+) buses, conforming to emission control standards, duty exemption on import of CKD kits of these buses by the local assemblers/manufacturers has been proposed.
