don't know abt the SL65 AMG, but heard that the SL55 AMG can make it to 186 mph and that is the top speed for the car in Europe......including Germany. the 155 mph limit is for USA.GTI VR6 wrote:german law limits most german cars to 155 top speed. it must suck to drive an SL65 AMG and not exploit its full potential in Germany.
even read in magazines and net that the SL55 AMG can actually go upto 208 miles, if it is wearing special tires. the problem is that the SL is a 4300 lbs car, and there is no tire manufacturer which makes tires that can actually carry a 4300 lbs car at 200+ mph. so they said in the mag that if some tire manufacturer makes special tires for SL 55 AMG, then it can actually make it to 208 mph.......So I'm assuming that the SL65 AMG can actually make it to 220+ mph with special tires on it. but i guess, right now, the 65 AMG also reaches upto 186 mph like the 55 AMG.

don't know abt what clarkson said, but i read in a magazine that 155 mph is for usa......but its not that expensive to remove the limiter. u'll just have to pay $600 to the dealer and they'll remove it for u. now i guess a person who can afford a 115k SL55 AMG or a 180k SL65 AMG, shouldn't have any problem paying $600 more for it........but it all depends how the driver/buyer wanna drive the car.GTI VR6 wrote:Jeremy Clarkson mentioned that the CL65 AMG has its speed limited to 155mph along with other high-end Mercs in Germany.

I don't have much of an idea abt tuning and stuffs, but i thought ECU tuning plays a bigger part in increasing hp and acceleration rather than the top speed. not sure though.arnab wrote:instead of paying the dealer 600 to remove the limiter, you can get a custom ecu that matches your driving style and location and the type of fuel use, the speed limiter would be removed free of charge

yeah fuel type and location if its better mapped which generally means more hp and torque. you know that the ecu's are very linient on the engine, it means that the ecu is really limiting the full potential of the car, this i am talking about the stock ecu. because the factory factors in the variables like, the user may forget to do regular maintenance and use cheaper quality/grade fuel. maybe the ambient temperature is not suited to exploit the cars full potential. they take an average and then make one map. but a few tweaks here are there like you can specify that you'd use on 98 octane fuel and not regular 87 octane. and that you would regularly maintain the car to factory specs and not a 3rd class 10 dollars services. also the ambient temperature and altitude of where you'd be driving mostly. so that the ecu is programmed to make full use of the surrounding and then transmit that into performance, hope you have understood my points.
