It would be very helpful if you could let everyone know what kind of car you're looking for....4X4s or sedans....Toyotas or Hondas....or anything else.

rent or are willing to purchase one? ..
the rent on the new merc e240 is 20,000 taka per day, inclusive of fuel and a cheffeur. a 95/97 toyota corolla/camry with the same pack is around 1000/1500 taka per day.
an unregistered recondition 2002 corolla is around 10/12 lacs, add another 75 thousand for registration. ... a toyota starlet will set u back by approx 4/5 lacs.
they had a rule which allowed returning visitors to bring in their cars and be used in bangladeshfor for six months, tax , registration waived.. provided they take it back... i dont know if this law is still applicable... if so, would be cheaper for you. ... or u can always use the public transport.

i really appreciate the input. i want to buy instead of renting one. my price range is a max of 10 lakhs. will i get any suv at this price range? if i need to buy a sedan, my price range in 5 to 7 lakhs. what would i get on this budget?
anyone know about NRB benefits (tax benefits) for bringing their used cars permanently.

with the recent price hike u'd be struggling to get an unreg'd recondition'd suv at that budget. however, used 95/96 rav4's and crx's goes between 5/7 lacs. these cars are well used in dhaka so dont expect same quality of wear and tear as u'd find in used vehicles in the states or UK of the same manufactured time period.
i sold my 99 starlet, with a pair recaros, a momo racer wheel, auto transmission, single din cd, ac,abs, srs, 57K on the clock for 3half. and one of my m8s sold his 98 carina similar configuration minus the seats and the wheel for 6 half. both these cars were well looked after but mine needed new piston rings. hope this'll give u an overview of what u might expect.
Dhaka has a used car market .. its called "car hut" . takes place every friday on a field opposite the parliament, in manik mia avenue. i'd stongly recommend that u dont buy anything from there. As most of the vehicles there are refurbished only to last a test drive. prices of there are usu. between 2half, 2:75 for a 95 carina. a 95 shape honda prelude went for 4.75 once.

regarding NRB's, your car will be exempted of the subsidary tax. was 15 percent for my 2.6ltr a year back, i think its 35% now for anything above 1.6ltrs .. you must have registration papers stating u owned the vehicle for a period of six months to a year and..you'll still have to bear the customs tax in bangladesh.
thanks MONK

sabbir, i honestly cant help you with the assessment of your car. you need to find a customs clearing and forwarding agent in dhaka or ctg to evalutate it on your behalf. try doing a search on c&f agents in BD on the web .. and get in touch with them.
