Volvo is currently starting pre-production of the new V 70 in the company’s Torslanda factory. The car is set to hit the showrooms in spring 2007.
The new V 70 continues the Volvo tradition of the single body styling as station wagon. Here now are first pictures showing a prototype without any disguise. It is a V 70 T 5 with four wheel drive, and the resemblance to the S 80 which had its debut at the last Geneva Motor Show is unmistakable. The most eye-catching feature of the new V 70 is the large taillight unit, part of which opens with the rear door. The wheelbase is 8 cm longer than on its predecessor, a size needed to stand up against the very successful Audi A 6 Avant competitor.
Engines will come from the Volvo S 80, but also a few more new ones will be offered. Among those is a new Ethanol engine 2.0 litre F, and a five cylinder 2.0 litre Turbo engine delivering about 200hp. Furthermore there will be two Diesel engines to chose from plus a top of the line V 70 R 4.4 litre Turbo V8 performing 350hp. However, this high end version will come on the market another year later earliest.
