ouch! but that clearly shows how expensive the ps3 is... and how desparate some people are in getting it.

srry for the offtopic, but i heard a similar story when a 15 year old was beaten up by 36 year old when trying to buy a copy of gear of wars

PS3 Mania By The Numbers:

8 = reported incidents of violence surrounding PS3 launches nationwide. Scroll down to the end of this Engadget post for details, or watch this You Tube video of a riot that broke out in North Fresno.

300 = amount in U.S. dollars Sony will lose on each unit sold. Researchers at iSuppli estimate that Sony will lose anywhere from $300 to $540 on each PS3 sold, due to the high cost of the system's sophisticated computer elements. "There is nothing cheap about the PlayStation 3 design," says iSuppli analyst Andrew Rassweiler. "This is not an adapted PC design. Even beyond the major chips in the PlayStation 3, the other components seem to also be expensive and somewhat exotic."

3 = number of sleepless days spent waiting in line by the first person to purchase a PS3 in San Francisco, Engadget. See also coverage of the Hollywood launch at Kotaku.

100 million = highest winning bid for a PS3 on eBay. As Joystiq's Kyle Orland points out, "That's nearly half the gross domestic product of Tonga!" [View this story on Netscape]

1 = number of political scandals caused by PS3 Mania. Former Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards, who has famously criticized Wal-Mart's labor practices, admitted yesterday that a volunteer staff member called the retailer and dropped Edwards' name in an attempt to get a PS3 without waiting in line. Wal-Mart then issued a finger-wagging statement accusing the ex-Senator of trying to cheat his fellow Americans out of cutting edge gaming technology: "While the rest of America's working families are waiting patiently in line, Sen. Edwards wants to cut to the front." [View this story on Netscape]

Update, 12:42 PM: Navigator Neophile pointed me towards this story, which stands in counterpoint to all the violent madness: Good Samaritan Buys Hot Chocolate For PS3 Campers
