Vehicle import increases 54.78pc in FY05

The country's motor vehicle import increased by 54.78 percent in 2004-05 fiscal year.
According to Chief Controller of Import and Export statistics, dealers imported all kinds of new and old motor vehicle worth US$ 117.70 million during the period against $ 76.04 million import in 2003-04 fiscal year.
During the period, vehicles such as scooter, human haulers, and three wheelers worth $43.99 million were imported, clocking over 300 percent growth.
In 2004-05 fiscal year, cars worth $15.32 million were imported, posting 20.54 percent growth. Besides, buses worth $ 11.47 million were imported with 19.89 percent growth, trucks worth $ 15.95 million with 15 percent growth, and motorcycles valued at 26.19 million with 16.58 percent growth.
Cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles worth $ 12.71 million, $ 9.57 million, $ 13.80 million and $ 22.46 million were imported in 2003-04 fiscal year.
Import of minibuses decreased as dealers imported minibuses valued at $ 4.79 million in 2004-05 fiscal year against the import of $ 7.96 million buses in 2003-04 fiscal year.
Car dealers alleged a section of dishonest businessmen import light vehicles for private use but get the vehicles registered for commercial purposes to evade tax.
President of Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (Barvida) Abdul Mannan Khasru said the import of reconditioned vehicles decreased significantly despite the rise in overall import.
